Wow sometimes I wonder about VMware. If u install Mac OS X capitan with fusion 8 then suddenly copy and paste and hgfs (the ability to see mac file system from VMware breaks without any symptoms. 
Thanks to sam who ferreted it out here is what is going on:

  1. VMware switched from their proprietary VMware tools to open-VM-tools but this packages has way fewer features. 
  2. Even if you click in Reinstall VMware tools this doesn’t work because it won’t change what open-vm-tools installs. 

So here is what you have to do. I don’t know why it is so obscure:

sudo apt-get purge open-vm-tools

This gets rid of the drivers and then you can reinstall and copy and paste etc should work.
