This is such a confusing subject because besides writing a check, there are so many way to pay, here are some of them:
- IRS Online Account for Individuals. This is nice because it will give you the IRS notices that can get lost in USPS mail and also you can pay your 1040 and 1040ES either with an ABA transfer or with via third party site (for credit cards).
- IRS Direct Pay. This is a different system where you don’t get notices and things, but you can submit many different types of tax payments. As an example, you can fill out the 965 Transition Tax. If you don’t know what that is, that’s good, it’s complicated. Note that the 965 is for prior tax years, so make sure you know what tax year you are talking about. Since there is no login, you have to know some facts from prior returns to be able to do this, so have that handy!
- Washington State Capital Gains Portal. If you are subject to this, note that they will send you emails and there isn’t electronic filing, so you get to submit all kinds of documents yourself. You need a SecureAccess Washington Id, so beware.
If you have the misfortune to be a trustee, then you have to make online payments with for 1041 trusts with EFTPS which is complicated.
