Man, Synology has made some great strides in simplicity, but actually, the way it handles all the file ideas from volumes and shares to shared folders and trash is a little strange. So here are some tips and tricks:
- Undeleting Files in #recycled. You can set it to not delete folders but stick them into #recycled which is like the Trash on the Mac. The confusing thing is how to delete things there.
- Deletion takes a while. Also note that when you are deleting this takes a very long time, there is a notification icon at the upper left that tells you what it is up to. When I deleted 2TB of data (backups of files that were duplicated), it took an hour. These are non-blocking but a little confusing.
- Deleting a Shared Folder from the Control Panel, not the File Station. OK, more confusing naming, the name of the file client is “File Station” (they are in love with the name station to denote server-side admin). But one confusing thing is that you can delete any file from the File Station, but you can’t get rid of the main “Shared Folder”. Turns out that you have to do this from the control panel which is a completely different user interface.
