This stopped working, but was just great. Thank goodness for Google, looking at http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=190&t=94567 and it points out it is a security issue, you have to go to Package Center and select Any Publisher in the settings as this application isn’t signed or approved by Synology.
However, the folks at the Synology forum working on Crashplan (http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=190&t=100449) see to say that the latest update is broken and they get the same error message:

Looks like Chresnelson.ca/ has the answer for how to fix this for DSM 5.2 running Crashplan 4.2:

  1. Enable ssh access by following http://forum.synology.com/wiki/index.php/Enabling_the_Command_Line_Interface which in DSM 5.2 is start the web interface and then go to Control Panel/Terminal & SNMP and click Enable SSH. The password is for root is the same as for admin

  2. Install the Crashplan for Synology package from pcloadletter.co.uk using http://www.hanselman.com/blog/UPDATED2014HowToSetupCrashPlanCloudBackupOnASynologyNASRunningDSM50.aspx as instructions

  3. However his instructions are not quite right because you have to quote *.jar to prevent command line matching, so first extract the new .jar files and put them into place, not the use of quotes, also I don’t use the -o flag so you have to say yes to each change:

cd /var/packages/CrashPlan/target
unzip upgrade/1425276000420.jar "*.jar" -d lib/
unzip upgrade/1425276000420.jar "lang/*" -d .
  1. Now disable the broken upgrade.sh there should be a directory in the upgrade with a magic number for your installation
ls -l upgrade/1425276000420.*
cd upgrade/1425276000420.whatevervalue
mv upgrade.sh upgrade.sh.old
  1. Now you should be able to start Crashplan in the Synology Package interface
