Well it seems like hard drive failure month for me. Here are the drives, for personal machines, we are putting SSDs in as they are much faster and more reliable

  • iMac 2009. Yuck, this one is going to be hard to get out. It’s buried and I have to figure out how to get the glass off and then put a big SSD in the thing. 1TB sounds good! It is hanging and stuttering. Feels like disk failure
  • Mac Mini 2011. Seems to be hanging. Disk Utility says it is good, but feels like disk failure.
  • Synology DS1812+. Wow, this thing is pretty nice. Bad sectors were detected on a WD Red 3TB and it won’t pass SMART tests (all in the user interface). And it emailed me it had a problem :=0 I’m sure glad I’m running RAID-6, so I can swap a new one in and go.

Also warranty returns have gotten much easier. Seagate does it online and Western Digital returns at http://support.wdc.com/warranty/ let you check your warranty and ask for an RMA without having to dig up receipts.
