I’ve been getting a strange hang on my old iMac (24 inch early 2008 if you can believe that!). When I try to use the Finder, I get the spinning wheel of death for anywhere from five minutes to a day. It does eventually recover. In a reading about.com, it says that this is because the Mac OS X (in my case Mavericks) is waiting for something to stop. Here are it’s recommendation, although this doesn’t seem to have solved anything:

  • The usual, Disk Utility, repair permissions
  • Clearing the dynamic library cache from Terminal with: “sudo update_dyld_shared_cache -force”

These don’t seem to help. Maybe a reinstall of Mavericks?
In looking at the apple.com forums:

  • Look at activity monitor to see if some application is hogging everything. Not true on this machine
