I can’t get a Mac to pair with a Bluetooth keyboard, so needs a reset, this didn’t work for me. What I found was that even with a reset it wouldn’t work. I had to change the passcode option to generate one automatically (it was defaulting to 0000) and this worked. It seems that at least for the two battery keyboard, it stays sticky to a particular machine. So you can’t just say swap a keyboard between two laptops. Instead, when you want to switch, here is what you have to do because there isn’t an explicit pairing mode at least on Mountain Lion
- Make sure the other computer’s bluetooth is off! Otherwise, it will keep linking to that computer.
- For the mouse, turn it on and off and run the Bluetooth setup again
- For the keyboard, hold the power button until it turns off (the green LED goes off)
- Turn the keyboard on and *hold the power button down the whole time” This keeps it in pairing mode
- Run the Bluetooth setup and you should see the device (which means it is in pairing mode)
- Press continue and it will fail, but there will a Passcode Options at the bottom left
- Click on assign passcode automatically (it will be set to 0000)
- The display should show the 8 digits to press on the keyboard and press enter
Kind of a pain isn’t it?
Interesting that there is no factory reset on this as even with holding the button down you still see the old name of the keyboard. The key is to see if the LED blinks which means it is not accidentally pairing with something else, so the process is to try the thing below. If that doesn’t work then click on passcode options and choose automatic generate and you should type the eight digit thing in and press enter and pray!
How to Reset an Apple Wireless Bluetooth Keyboard, Mouse or Trackpad « Dave Meehan
Switch off the keyboard by holding down the power button for at least 3 seconds Click the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar Click on “Set Up Bluetooth Device” Turn on the keyboard by holding down the power button, BUT DO NOT LET GO OF THE POWER BUTTON. It must be kept held down through the entire process. The Setup Assistant will find the keyboard, so click the name of the keyboard, and then click on “Continue”. Make sure you are still holding the power button down. You will be prompted for the Pairing Code. You can now release the power button, type the pairing code on the keyboard and then press return. There will be a slight delay whilst the pairing completes (a few seconds) The keyboard will now be Paired.
