Amazing, I pretty much accidentally plugged it all in right. But if you have a late model generation 7 motherboard (we have a P8Z77-V Deluxe from ASUS) and you do things magically right before you submerge the thing in mineral oil, you can get amazing disk performance:
1. Get the fastest SSDs you can. They were the Samsung 830s, now they are the 840s. Techspot guys are capable of 500MBps read and 160MBps write sequentially.
2. Make sure to put them into the Grey Intel SATA connectors (there are no less than three colors, grey means SATA-6Gbps aka SATA-600, but there is also light blue and dark blue whicha re SATA-3GB and extra Marvell SATA-6GB for HDD only).
3. Install the latest Intel RST drivers. These are Intel’s own RAID drivers. Then disable write back cache flushing in Windows from the Manage panel.
4. Run the two SSDs in RAID-o configuration from the BIOS menu, set the disk type to RAID. You want 8K strips, but I can’t figure out how to set that quite yet. It is right now set for 128KB by default. Stripe size basically means that files bigger than this get striped. You need to type CTRL-I to get the RAID manager right after the boot manager comes up. A little confusing these aren’t integrated. There is an amazing amount of controversy about the best stripe size to use for gaming. From 8K (more CPU needed) to 128KB (less efficient for small files and some say less on a drive). Sigh.
4. Run CrystalMark and you will see sequential reads of 1GBps and writes of 784Gbps which is pretty amazing if you ask me!
